Axia, recognising how the significant expansion of IT infrastructure in schools could transform the learning experience for students and their teachers, has worked in close partnership with the Galileo Educational Network to develop Io – an online application where teachers learn how to incorporate technology into their teaching methods. Now in the pilot phase, Io is an internet accessible "community" where teachers learn how to assemble, step by step, a student project in which technology plays a key role. Io guides teachers through framing the direction a project can take, creating assessment criteria and identifying where and how students can harness online learning technology to create their projects. At each step of the process, teachers can dialogue with peers or experts for guidance. They can design projects for a single class, or collaborate with peers anywhere on the globe, creating a cross divisional or cross curriculum project linking students with classes, or resources, in other cities.
